The tour to Betatakin (Photos, left/right) starts with a ranger driving a van with fifteen people to a trailhead on the edge of the mesa, about two rough miles from the visitor center. Then a one and a half mile trail to the ruin. The trail drops about 700 feet off the cliff in about the first half mile.
