The tours all start at a facility down the hill from the castle, and you ride with your group on a bus that they operate, up to the castle, then stay with your group for the tour, then ride the bus back down to the facility. There is no opportunity to walk around on your own at the castle.

You canNOT get up to the grounds without being on a tour. The visitor center is at the bottom of the hill and when you take a tour you get onto a bus which then takes you up to the house. IF you are not on a tour you canNOT get up there.
