In reading the forums, I am aware that I need to pick up my ticket at the Colosseum.What I want to know is if I go in the morning and pick up my ticket at the colosseum but then go first to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill and then head back to the colosseum for my afternoon underground tour?

The underground tour only includes the underground and third tier. It does not include a tour of the main areas that are open to the public. Much of the information given on the underground tour is the same as the information given on the main tour so you really don't need to do both tours.
