Rahr’s Shakopee production facility annually produces 460,000 MT of malt, making it among the largest single-site malt production facilities in the world. The campus consists of six individual malthouses, four Saladin units and two towers. The original malthouse was constructed in 1937 with new houses added in 1954, 1977, 1981, 1994, and 2016.

Malting is a biological process that takes place in three steps: steeping, germination and kilning. Steeping – 36 to 48 Hours. Water is added at suitable temperatures (52-56°F) . Malting quality barley is directed into large steeping tanks filled with water, and air is injected into the water to maintain desired dissolved oxygen levels.
