    The Reed Research Reactor has been used for research and educational projects since its establishment in 1968. Safety, security, and compliance with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regulations have been the highest priority since its inception. Due to Oregon and Reed's COVID-19 policies we are currently unable to offer tours.

The tour lasts about 1 hour, and covers a wide range of topic, from the basics of reactor physics, to the operator training program, and the science we do at our reactor. Tours can easily be tailored for many different age groups and levels of education, from about sixth graders to adults.

    We accommodate any time within reason (8am-8pm, unless special circumstances). Tours can scale between 30 minutes to 1 hour. Labs take about 1 hour. Estimated number of attendees * 1-24 people. If you have more than 24 people, request another tour at a different time for the remainder. We can really only handle 24 people in the facility at a time.

    The Reed College Reactor is a TRIGA Mark I reactor at the bottom of a 25-foot-deep tank. It uses zirconium hydride/uranium hydride fuel elements in a circular grid array. The uranium fuel is enriched to 20 percent uranium-235. The reactor is surrounded by a graphite ring which minimizes neutron leakage by reflecting neutrons back into the core.
