On January 7, 1985, Saturn Corporation was formed as a subsidiary of General Motors to compete with Japanese imports, and shortly thereafter, began searching for a site for a manufacturing facility.Then-governor Lamar Alexander began encouraging GM to locate the plant in Tennessee.
