Aug 12, 2003 · The band (as as been mentioned) were typically awesome. I remember hearing a FZ interview on BBC Radio a while later where he never went into much detail, just that they fell apart - the other members refused to play with Scott Thunes. FZ said the cancellation of the remainder of the tour cost him personally somewhere in the region of $250,000.

May 20, 2005 · Every show in the 1988 tour was unique: It was part of Zappa's 'aesthetic philosophy' to reward the audience for paying attention. He would change the setlist, the style and the lyrics of the songs, insert musical references (the famous 'Louie, Louie' riff) and parodies (the 'Billy Jean' vamp in 'Why don't you like me?'

The Frank Zappa 1988 Tour Project

The Frank Zappa 1988 Tour Project. I remember seeing ads for Frank Zappa's stop in Columbus in March 1988. I was already a fan at this point, but I was only 13 and didn't know many people who liked this sort of music, and I was then under the Rolling Stone-influenced delusion that the only "good" Zappa was the early Mothers albums. So I missed out on what turned out to be Zappa's last tour.

Mar 19, 2014 · There's actually a great book on the '88 tour if you're interested called Zappa the Hard Way by Andrew Greenaway. I got the impression that it was a number of factors. It seems Scott Thunes has a personality that rubbed a lot of the band the wrong way, and this was exacerbated when Frank put him in charge of rehearsals when he couldn't make it.

By the '88 tour, Zappa would appoint band members to act as a rehearsal leader or "Klonemeister" to rehearse the rest of the band in his absence. With Frank spinning many plates including his home video business and his dabbling in foreign trade the job fell on bassist Scott Thunes.

Dec 21, 2011 · 1) Mike Keneally (Steve Vai's replacement as Stunt Guitarist in FZ's band) was the only band member who took the side of Scott Thunes, Zappa's totally brilliant but obnoxious and caustic bass player and appointed "Clonemeister" (person appointed by Zappa to rehearse the group until he shows up, basically imitating what FZ does) for the 1988 tour.Reviews: 88
