Tommi Salmela has been involved with Tarot for many years, originally as a roadie before providing backing vocals both on record and on-stage. He has only recently been made a full-time member of the band and now performs co-lead vocals with Marco Hietala. The Hietala brothers both use stage names slightly different from their real names (their real names are Marko and Sakari).

In 1986, Tarot received a deal for their first album and went on tour. Before becoming a full-time musician, he worked as a live and studio sound engineer. Hietala joined Nightwish in 2001 when Tuomas Holopainen and the band's manager called him and said that there would be a place in the band for a vocalist and a bass player.
