May 13, 2009 · Yes, as suddenly as it began, the Tour d’Afrique 2009 has rolled to its finale, a long long long road from its first day in Cairo. Picking up the saga where I left off on the Namibian-South African border, after a welcome day of rest, the group crossed into the Tour’s final country and then spent six consecutive days doggedly ticking off the remaining 750km to Cape Town.

In January 2009 I began a four month, ten country bicycle ride with Tour d’Afrique Ltd. (www.tourdafrique.com) from Cairo, Egypt to Cape Town, South Africa. My goal was not only to complete the ride but to teach a university course related to African food, agriculture and agroecosystems to students on the University of Minnesota campus.

Tour d'Afrique is one of the longest bicycle races and expeditions in the world. It is organised by TDA Global Cycling, a Canadian company based in Toronto. It runs each year from January to May, from Cairo to Cape Town.Most of the participants are expedition riders who cover each day at their own pace, stopping in the villages and roadside cafes.
