John Treadwell, a miner with experience in California and Nevada, was living in San Francisco when he heard the news in 1881. By September, Treadwell had moved north and purchased the Paris claim across the channel from Juneau on Douglas Island. Between 1882-1922, the Treadwell Mine complex yielded nearly $70 million (1914 dollars) in gold.
